BMW fans in Knoxville can see the new models that include the sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon.  The sixth-generation BMW 3 Series sedan is longer, wider and roomier than its predecessor, and features all-new sheet metal, a revamped cockpit, a new turbocharged four-cylinder variant and a new eight-speed automatic transmission option.

The 328i and 335i are offered in three trim levels: Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line. An M Sport package will also soon be offered.

BMW has fitted its N20 engine, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline unit, to the 328i. The engine, which was first introduced in the 2012 Z4 sDrive28i, delivers 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and drives the rear wheels through a standard six-speed manual gearbox.

BMW says the 328i achieves 0-60 acceleration in 5.7 seconds, with an electronically governed top speed of 130 mph (155 mph with the Sport Line trim level).  The 335i’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft, and sprints from zero to 60 in 5.4 seconds, with the same upper speed limits.

Fuel-conscious Knoxville BMW shoppers will appreciate the new technology of the 2012 3-Series models that is aimed at efficient driving dynamics. The new 3 Series features Efficient Dynamics, a combination of systems designed to minimize fuel consumption.

An automatic start-stop function is one such feature and it comes standard with both manual and automatic transmissions. This system automatically switches off the engine at traffic lights or in stationary traffic.  It’s joined by BMW’s Brake Energy Regeneration system, which powers the alternator only during braking or overrun.

Of even greater importance is the Eco Pro mode for the Driving Experience Control unit. This switchable option retunes the powertrain, climate control, heated seats and exterior mirrors to maximize efficiency. BMW believes this alone is capable of reducing fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent. Exactly how it’s calculating that number, we’re not exactly sure.
